Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) has been instrumental in advancing telemedicine services to bridge healthcare gaps in Nepal's remote Karnali Province. These initiatives aim to provide accessible, specialist medical care to communities that face geographical and infrastructural challenges.
📞 Telemedicine Services at KAHS
1. Phone-Based Specialist Consultations:
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, KAHS initiated outpatient specialist services via telephone. This approach was designed to minimize hospital crowding and cater to patients unable to visit the hospital physically. Doctors provided consultations through mobile phones daily from 8 AM to 12 AM, ensuring continuous support for patients during challenging times.
2. Expansion Across Karnali Province:
Telemedicine services have been extended to 42 health institutions across six districts: Jajarkot, Humla, Mugu, Surkhet, Dolpa, and Jumla. This expansion has enabled residents in remote villages to access specialist services without the need to travel long distances. For instance, in Dolpa District, a 12-year-old boy with a fractured hand received treatment through telemedicine, guided by an orthopedic specialist from Surkhet.
3. Technological Infrastructure and Training:
To support telemedicine services, health institutions have been equipped with necessary technology, including internet connectivity, computers, and Android systems. A dedicated software named “Karnali Care” has been developed to maintain patient records and facilitate consultations. Health workers receive training to operate these systems effectively, ensuring seamless communication between local health posts and specialist doctors.
4. Integration with Electronic Medical Records (EMR):
In 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) handed over an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system to KAHS. This transition from paper-based to digital records enhances healthcare management by improving data handling, enabling better patient follow-ups, and strengthening public health intelligence. The EMR system integrates epidemiological surveillance with hospital and laboratory data, facilitating informed decision-making and policy development.
